The term of fiat means "let it be done or by order of the authority".Fiat money is an intrinsically worthless(almost worthless) commodity that serves the functions of money.Some of the earliest fiat monies were the continental currency issued during the American Revolution and the "greenbacks" issued during the Civil War,which circulated until 1879.Another early issue of fiat money was that of the so-called assignat issued during the French Revolution.These early experiments with fiat money ended in rapid inflation because the amount of fiat money created was allowed to increase at a rapid pace,causing the money to lose value.
