Abstract:Slope aspect has a significant effect on the
development and distribution of montane forest, especially in arid and semiarid
regions.This paper,using SPOT5 images and 1:50000 DEM,extracts and analyzes
detailed spatial information of montane coniferous forest (mainly Qinghai
spruce),and thereby explores how the upper and lower limits and altitudinal
range of the coniferous forest vary along all the aspects and how annual
insolation affects the area of coniferous forest in the Helan Mountains located
in the transitional zone of arid and semiarid areas of China. It concludes that:
1) in the eastern flank of the Helan Mts.,the lower limit of coniferous forest
is between 1600~2000m asl.,and the upper limit between 2800~3000m asl; in the
western flank, the lower limit of coniferous forest is between 2000~2300m asl.,
and the upper limit between 2800~3100m asl.2) The area of coniferous forest
takes on a normal distribution with aspect, and the R2 of
fitting results is 0.954,0.986 and 0.990,and the RMSE 4.632,4.004 and 5.285,
respectively, for the eastern flank, western flank and the whole mountain.3)
The altitudinal ranges of coniferous forest are between 806m~1435m,438m~1140m
for eastern flank and western flank,respectively.4) The area of coniferous forest
has a close relationship with annual insolation, with the coefficient of
correlation (R) between them as high as -0.9714,-0.8579 and -0.9578,for the
eastern flank, western flank and the whole mountain, respectively, indicating
that the aspect-related distribution area of coniferous forest has a
significant negative correlation with annual insolation. This spatial model
reveals quantitatively the significant effect of slope aspect on thedistribution of coniferous forest in northwest arid China.
