Yao is one of the most ancient nationalities in China; relevant record of its origin was found as early as in the pre-Qin ancient book ”Shanhaijing” which described that Emperor Shun had a son called Xi,and the descendants of Xi were called Yao.”Emperor Pan Song” is an integral part of the songs of the Yao nationality.During the long stretches of history,the Yao people had been creating a splendid national culture with their own intelligence and wisdom,and ”Emperor Pan Song” is one of the roses.According to legend,the Yao nationals are the descendants of Emperor Pan,and sacrificial activities are held periodically or irregularly to commemorate the emperor.
流传在瑶族自治县瑶族居住地区的《盘王歌》,是瑶族人民世世代代祭祀盘王礼仪活动而产生并不断发展的古歌史曲,是具有鲜明民族特色的民间文学.《盘王歌》是瑶族人民生活、斗争、想象、追求的集中反映.它用朴素、通俗易懂的民族语言描述历史事件与人物,使人易于接受和口传.加之歌唱时用传统的民族唱腔、男女对唱,妙趣横生；悦人耳目,引人入胜,使人百听不厌.重要的是它源于生活,高于生活,具有浓厚的生活气息和民族特点.
Circulating among the residential areas in the Yao Autonomous County,the ”Emperor Pan Song” is an ancient song created for the worshiping ceremonies of Emperor Pan by the Yao people over many generations; it is a folklore with distinctive national characteristics and it is still growing continuously.The ”Emperor Pan Song” collectively reflects the lives,struggles,imaginations and aspirations of the Yao people.It narrates the historical events and figures by using a national language that is simple and easy to understand,which makes it acceptable by people and easy to pass on by word of mouth.In addition,the song is sung by men and women in antiphonal style by using a traditionally national vocal; it is full of wits and humors,pleasant to the eyes and ears,fascinating and appealing,and the people never get tired of listening to it.But most importantly,it was originated from life and yet it is on a higher level,with a strong smack of everyday life and national characteristics.
