2.3.3 Predicate Verbs
Most English sentences are composed of subject and predicate, and the latter is more important which decides sentence patterns(He,2002).That’s to say, “predicates are indispensable in English and are composed of verbs”(Ren,1981,p117).Errors of misuse of predicate verbs often occurred.
Example 1:*I confident, if I do my effort to do everything, I will acquire my want to get the job.(I am confident)
Example 2: It is become so difficult to hunt for jobs.(becomes)
Example 3: I will*to do preparation for the future.(do)
In example 1 the predicate is not a complete one. To correct it, an auxiliary verb am be added, because be+adjective (phrase) can be a complete predicate verb. Adjective in Chinese, on contrary to it, the auxiliary verb is in (2)is superfluous because the finite verb become can serve independently as the predicate. Sentence 3 is lack of a finite verb. Infinitive can’t be used as predicate.
Example 1 I beautiful ,everybody likes me.(I am beautiful)
Example 2:I am feel sorry for him.(feel)
Example 3:I will to work in the factory.(work)
example 1 is short of the auxiliary verb.only be+adjective can be a correct sentence. In example 2,however,the auxiliary verb is redundant, because the finite verb can act as a predicate perfectly.IN example3,infinitive can not be considered as predicate,so we should change it into finite verb.
