Perception of belonging is shaped by one’s personal, historical and cultural context. It is important for individual to understand their culture and keep their identity in order to feel their sense of belonging. In the poem “Feliks Skrzynecki”,the poet’s father has strong links with his cultural and historical background. The poet’s father lives in his own culture even though he is an immigrant. As described in the poem the poet’s father is “only with the Joneses of his own garden” and “his polish friends” which symbolises the father is in his Polish culture and feels belonging. The garden is where the poet’s father feels most comfortable. In contrast, the poet does not have a connection with his culture and he does not know where to belong. He keeps the barrier between himself and his father and tries to search for his own identity and friendship. In the last stanza, the poet wrote “I forgot my first Polish word” and “further and further south of Hadrian’s wall”.Metaphor of Hadrian’s wall symbolises the barrier between the poet and his father’s culture. He moves away from his father’s heritage which is shown as he never remembers the Polish word.He does not want to adapt to the language of his father and therefore he does not feel belonging.
