The proliferation of pallet sizes across the world has taken place despite the
resulting reduction in the efficiency of distribution,which was the main reason
why pallets were initially created.The cost of pallet management has gradually
risen with the addition of pallet sizes.Such paradoxical behaviour is known in
game theory literature as the ‘tragedy of the commons’:companies end up consuming
a public good in a manner that leaves them worse off than if they had
taken into account the repercussions of their actions on other consumers and had
cooperated with them in deciding how to use the public good.
