State laws usually permit some unemployment benefits if the worker is not totally unemployed but is able to earn some small amount of money-say,through odd jobs-that is less than the worker’s usual wage.In most states the amount of the benefit is the regular benefit less actual earnings or other payments. If actual earnings are less than some allowances, for example,one-half or one-third of the weekly benefit, there is no reduction in payment. These provisions reduce the temptation for a worker to cease all attempts at earning some thing for fear of losing the unemployment check.
