Today,many manufacturing companies are implementing just-in-time inventory systems,designed to minimize their inventories of raw materials and finished goods.Although these systems can reduce the costs associated with carrying substantial inventories,they also involve considerable risk,As stated earlier,even a temporary delay in the arrival of key raw materials may bring the company’s manufacturing operations to a halt.
Many retailing companies deliberately maintain large inventories to offer their customers a wide selection of merchandise.Such advertising slogans as “largest selection in town,” and “Available for immediate delivery” reflect marketing strategies that involve a large inventory.
In contrast,retailers that sell merchandise tailored to customers’ specifications often maintain little of no inventory.These companies do not purchase their merchandise until after they have an order from their customer.In essence,these businesses have just-in-time inventory systems.
