Why has there been such an increase in interest by business firms in international marketing?

Because business firms devote themselves to pursuing greater interests/profits.However,there is an upper limit of profits in the demestic market,so this may encourages these firms to turn to international marketing to ensure their business income and more profits.This also agree with the further development of these firms in the long run.
