Londoners sometimes boast that London is the grandest city in the world.Parisians argue that Paris is the most beautiful.Romans point out with pride that Rome is richer in history than any other city.
New Yorkers never maintain that New York City is the grandest, the most beautiful,or richest in history.Their claim is that their city is the most vital city in the world.
It is not, many believe,an exaggerated claim .The first thing a visitor often notices is that New York City virtually pulsates with life and energy. Is it any wonder that when New Yorkers talk about their city, they describe it almost as a living person?
It has often been said that Americans living outside New York City have two hometowns:their own and New York City.New York City is part of the national consciousness. It is not difficult to understand why.
Most great American writers and playwrights have set one of their tales or plays there.
Many television programs –new, cultural, sporting and dramatic –originate in New York City and are transmitted throughout the nation. One could argue that if you do not go to New York City,New York will find a way to go to you.Still, visiting this famous city is even more fun than seeing it through the eyes of artists and moviemakers.
New York City is often called “The Big Apple”.It was jazz musicians who made up the phrase,“The Big Apple”,to describe something which is the ultimate in size, excitement and achievement.
The Big Apple’s roughly seven million people make it the largest city in the U.S.A,and the sixth largest in the world. These people must be fed, watered, clothed, educated, informed, entertained, exercised, kept heated in winter and cooled in summer. They must also be policed and protected from fire, epidemics, theft, and murder. The Big Apple is usually equal to this gigantic task.
not counting pay TV channels, and thirty-nine AM and FM radio stations provide New Yorkers with news, music, drama, sports and comedy.Theatres, ballets ,concert halls,sixty-five museums ,five zoos, one planetarium, and one aquarium delight and inform the city’s inhabitants .Two basketball teams ,two ice-hockey teams ,and tow racetracks give the Big Apple’s sport fans countless thrills. There is even a harness racing track where jockeys ride in light carriages pulled by trotting horses. For New Yorkers who like to participate in sport,as well as to watch it,there are 538 municipal tennis courts, thirteen golf courses,thirty-seven outdoor and nine indoor swimming pools and facilities for boating and biking.
