With the November 20th Hitman Absolution UK release date now just days away, Roberto Marchesi, Art Director on the upcoming title, has said the game was ‘limited’ by current generation consoles.
Stating that the current breed of consoles, namely the Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 ‘limited the game’, Marchesi, speaking in an exclusive interview with Trusted Reviews, added that the imminent addition to the much loved Hitman gaming franchise “does start to show the limitations of the current technology.”
Admitting that there are lots of things he would have liked to have seen in Hitman Absolution which weren’t possible because of these limitations, Marchesi suggested that the current-gen consoles are causing developers to make compromises when tackling new releases.
“It’s always a give and take,” he said. “You also have to balance it with the gameplay; is it really a loss to the game or not? Sometimes you have an idea and you think it’s really good but when it gets removed from the game and no-one notices maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to begin with.”
Despite admitting to the limitations creeping into development of Xbox 360 and PS3 titles, Marchesi revealed that it is not all doom and gloom as the Nintendo Wii U rivals still have a lot to offer.
“Working with a proven platform is not necessarily a bad thing,” the Hitman Absolution Art Director said. “We have learned so much compared to when the consoles first came out, we can push so much more.
"We are actually making a game now [i.e. not Hitman!] that is impressive from a technological point of view. We’re pushing the limits and it’s actually more fun to make something impressive with limited resources.”
Looking ahead to the next-generation consoles and the heavily rumoured Xbox 720 and Sony PS4, Marchesi predicted that “The first games that will come out for the next generation of consoles will probably be just like an upscaled version of everything.
“All the textures will be ramped up twice, the resolution, everything… it’s just going to have more polygons – that’s really just a brute force approach to making great-looking games and in a way it’s much more of a challenge doing it with this current generation.”
