There’s a growing epidemic of short sightedness around the world. Up to 90% of some Asian communities are affected and around a half of European populations. And more and more evidence is coming in that a child’s visual environment is very important in causing it.
Shortsighted people tend to have longer eyes which means that light rays focus in front of the retina at the back of the eye instead of on it. If parents are short-sighted then their offspring are more likely to be born with longer eyes. The worse the parents’ vision, the stronger the link.
But animal experiments have found that eye development can be significantly affected by visual experiences in early life.
