In order to learn a language well, we should also learn about the country as well as the cultures and lifestyles of the people who speak this language. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
As speeding up the globalization, in what approach to learn a foreign language better becomes a heat topic. Some people suggeest that we should learn the country, cultures and lifestyles of the people who speak this language. I firmly believe that this is a necessary approach.
From my point of view, languages are not separated from cultures and lifestyles of the countries that speak them. There is no denying the fact that most languages are invited by the aboriginals, who use them to communicate with each other while working and living. For example, Chinese is considered one of the most difficult languages to learn. It is because that China has distinct cultures and lifestyles from other countries. Language reflects the way people thinking and responding to what happening. If you know from what angle Chinese people think about things, as a foreigner, you will have better understanding about Chinese.
Secondly, some people claim that there are some colonial countries speak English as well. It seems nothing help to learn about their cultures and lifestyles. This partly true. However, the colonist has brought not only English, but all the cultures related to English. Thus consequently changed the backgroud of colonial countries. As result, it does helpful to know their cultures and lifestyles.
Finally, some people argue that learning a language is a skill just like knowing to do mathmatics. I completely disagree. This is mainly because that we can’t claim we have master a language as long as we can make a speech or write an essay. Everybody can tell the 26 English letters. This doesn’t mean everybody speaks English. If we aim to master it, we have to begin with learning the cultures and lifestyles of native speakers.
Above all, in spite of we have to spending extra time to learn the foreign cultures and lifestyles. I am still convinced that to master a language, this is an indispensable step.
