Should originality always be more highly praised than conformity?
In my view, this kind of prompts have a strong intention to compel us to write in one perspective since there is words like "always"\"only" or other words too absolute.
If I answer yes to these questions, there will certainly be many examples to list, which make it easier for my to complete an essay. But,I will seem to be very absolute, very bigoted, which is not the quality of a critical thinker SAT testers want.
If I answer no,there are too few examples to praise conformity. If there are,I will not be able to think of three good ones in 25 minutes.
So,I WONDER if I say:
Originality should not always be more highly praised than conformity, but usually to be original is more preferable.
Then I use examples to demonstrate the advantages of originality.
is OK
Is this essay digressive as it simply proves the advantage of originality but fails to convey the thesis which emphasizes "not always"?
If all ideas above are not applicable, would you please provide some more creative ways to answer these questions?
From my experience with SAT,examiners do not look down upon students who assert a strong opinion on the topic, rather they prefer students who convey the thesis clearly and who take a firm stand on the issue. So if the student vacillates between "always" and "not always," the essay would not have a clear take on the topic. You are right in the sense that you should choose your view based on the examples you can think of,so thinking of 3 examples (standard) for the essay in 3 minutes is the suggested time frame. So below are couple examples I would pick.Of course,I recommend against using personal examples.
ALWAYS:originality leads to a better world, where people contribute to wellbeing with their own talents and perspectives.
Gallileo - did not conform with Catholic dogma, and led scientific breakthroughs in astronomy.
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley - Bernard and John asserts their own thoughts and values in the society, and resolves to live their own way for their own happiness.
