say something about the conflict in"Hills like White Elephants"?

The conflict was revealed in the story through the conversation that became an argument of the American man and the young girl named Jig. It was basically about aborting the baby that Jig was carrying in her womb.
The American was trying to persuade Jig to abort the baby because he feels that everything will be okay and everything will go back normal. When he said“We’ll be fine afterward. Just like we were before." and "That's the only thing that bothers us. It's the only thing that's made us unhappy." it showed that the he was too bothered about having a baby which requires great responsibility. Maybe he was also worried about his social life. In my opinion, what made it ironic was when he said "Well, if you don't want to you don't have to. I wouldn't have you do it if you didn't want to. But I know it's perfectly simple." It was like he was playing safe because he was showing that he cared about what Jig feels but in the same time, in a way, he was still convincing her to do it. It's either Jig's decision also matters to him or he was really just playing it safe.
