I went to Bergen (Norway, not NJ) for Christmas. It was very quiet, very few tourists. I stayed in a wonderful hotel, well located, very comforable, that compared favorably with the Rome Airport Hilton. I did a little sightseeing and shopping on Tuesday. None of the tourist sights were open on Christmas Eve and the stores closed at noon. I found a fish shop that had fried fish balls and fish cakes to take out, so I bought some and ate in my room. They were delicious.
Unfortunately, almost everything was closed and I ended up having Christmas dinner at the Radisson Hotel, which was one of the few places open. They had a buffet with many salads, which I do not eat; baked haddock with butter, roast beef with gravy, what I think was whale, which I didn't try since one of my German friends advised me not to eat it (she had some when she was in Norway some years ago and said it's terrible); and, of course, boiled potatoes, which were excellent (Norwegians eat lots of potatoes). The dessert section was to die for, but not traditionally Norwegian. I had strawberries with cream, an outstanding chocolate mousse with mocha sauce, a very good mousse with a light lemon flavor and flan (the flan in Mexico's better). I must have gained 10 kg just from the desserts.
Otherwise, I drank coffee in my room, smoked cigarettes (the room was a smoking room which is the only place you could smoke in the hotel), and read. I couldn't even talk to my cats since they were at home in east Germany, but I thought about them. This is the farthest north I've ever been at this time of the year; it was still dark as night at 8:30 AM and began to get dark around 3 PM in the afternoon, so there's not much daylight there in the winter, but in the summer they have the midnight son.
I flew home Thursday on 2nd Christmas. Over here the day after Christmas is called second Christmas. Absolutely nothing ij Luebben, which is halfway from here to Berlin, was open and I had to stop at the Aral Tankstelle to get a cup of coffee on my way home from the airport (2 hour drive).
When I arrived home, the babies were glad to see me and all wanted to be petted, even the farm tiger and he didn't bite or claw his mommy either! I found 2 kinds of chocolate torte from my cleaning lady whose husband is a baker and a figurine of Donald Duck from my neighbor's 2 kids ages 5 and 7 and, of course, lots of heavy petting, accompanied by purring and pawing, from the babies.
Norway is wonderful; I love it and want to go back when there's more open. Fortunately, it wasn 't too cold and there wasn't any snow.
