In 1816,there were no schools for the deaf in the United States. The first people to succeed were Laurent Clerc and Thomas Gallaudet. They opened their school in 1817.It was the only school for deaf children in America.
Clerc and Gallaudet did not know what would happen after they opened their school. They worked very hard. The school grew, and many more students came from all over the country.People thought the school would be big enough for all of the deaf children in American.
The first state supported school for the deaf opened in Kentucky in 1823 and had a rich history.John Hacobs was the first teacher to teach the deaf, but did not know how to teach.Yet the young man wanted to work with deaf people.John rode his horse all the way to Gallaudet and Clerc for help.Thay taught him how to sign and how to teach deaf students. When he finished,John went to Danville and worked for many years at the school for the deaf there.
Later on,many of the teachers used Gallaudet's methods. Many had even studied with Gallaudet and they deaf themselves!
