这是几个固定的搭配，先排除搭配不正确的，然后再根据语法选择。

看这句话可以大致猜到意思是：...天黑了...他意识到是回家的时间了。所以重点是要用什么来连接前后两句。
再看4个选项中不同词组的意思：
a. No sooner it grew dark when
这个应该是想让大家理解为“天一黑就...”，但固定用法是"No sooner...than..."，而且在No sooner之后应该跟动词倒装句（例如No sooner did it grow dark...），所以这个选项不正确。
b. Hardly it grew dark than
