One part in each investigation is used to assess students’developing scientific practices. Carry the Scientific Practices Checklist with you to record students’ progress.
Recording Benchmark Data
Use the Assessment Record to record students’responses on the benchmark assessments (survey, I-Checks, and posttest).
Follow this procedure if you plan to use the I-Checks for formative assessment.
1. Record students’ responses on the Assessment Record or on a spreadsheet.For multiple-choice and true-false items, record the letter of the response rather than the code. (Later, if you need a total score, you can replace the letter responses with code numbers.) For multiple-answer items, check the coding guide; for short-answer questions, record the word or the code, depending on the answer patterns you want to see. Do not make any marks on students’papers. (Students will do that later.)
2. Look for patterns of right and wrong answers, so that you can determine which questions will need more follow-up reflection and discussion by students.
3. Review students’open-response answers. Record codes on the Assessment Record. Make notes about concepts or ideas you want to bring back for more student reflection.
