这句话出自笛卡尔的名著《谈谈方法》第一章,原文是法语：

英译为：The reading of all good books is indeed like a conversation with the noblest men of past centuries who were the authors of them, nay a carefully studied conversation, in which they reveal to us none but the best of their thoughts.

很多名言警句集只截取了这句话的前一段：The reading of all good books is indeed like a conversation with the noblest men. 所以就变成我们看到的那样.
至于歌德有没有说过这句话,我只能说,在歌德的秘书艾克曼（John Peter Eckermann）写的《与歌德的谈话》中找不到,这本书记录的是歌德生命中最后10年里与艾克曼的许多谈话.歌德有没有在别处说过这话,就不好判断了.但是,所有声称这句话为歌德名言的人都没有给出详细可查的出处,这就非常值得怀疑.英文网站里也搜不到歌德与这句话的联系.所以,除非有人能给出精确到页数的出处,否则我不能相信歌德说过或引用过这句话.
