be sorry for doing sth是表示做了某事而感到抱歉
be sorry about sth是对某事感到抱歉
其实并不矛盾啊，一个修饰动词，一个修饰名词，我觉得楼上举的例子很到位

sorry for：为...感到可惜.
eg.I am sorry for your failing in the exam.我为你考试不及格感到可惜.
sorry about sth.为什么事感到抱歉.
eg.I am sorry about my mistake.我对我的错误感到抱歉.
