If I name a place as second hometown, I would defi nitely sayAtlanta. I still remember what Georgia Tech looked like ten yearsago, when I was studying for my master degree in Polymer during2002~2004. As Steve Jobs said: When you look back, all dots connected.Georgia Tech is the place where all my dots started, and Iwish to trace my line of dots back.
Dot 1: A life-changing presentation course
When I was studying at Tech, I took a presentation courseat business school with MBA students and was the only one fromEngineering School. The lecturer was Ms. Spring Asher, who wasalways nice and patient. A Turkish student in our class always added“Errr...” when he spoke. All students laughed at him. Ms. Asher, however, always corrected him with an encouraging smile on herface. In the fi nal presentation, after he presented, Ms. Asher asked:“Do you know how many ‘errrs’ you said?” His face turned red. Ms.Asher said: “Eleven! But do you remember how many errrs youadded in the fi rst class? More than 100! After one semester, youimproved 90%! If you pay more attention to that, you will get rid of it!Congratulations!”
What had Ms. Asher made me realize is that we only need tocompete with ourselves and keep improving!
In the next year, when Engineering School was selecting onestudent to participate in a national contest of graduate student presentation,I raised my hand. I worked extremely hard and applied allthe skills I had learned in class. I turned out to be the 2nd place! Thisaward also helped me get my dream job in PepsiCo. 6 years later,my fi rst book Don’ t Tell Me That You Know PowerPoint won oneof the top 10 bestselling books of Amazon China in 2010, thanks tothat presentation class from Ms. Asher.
Dot 2: A good advisor in early career
My fi rst job offer was signed by Carlos Barroso, ex-VP of PepsiCoand an alumnus of Tech from Chemical Engineering. He was10 levels higher than me, but talked to me like an elder brother. When I was just on board, he told me three most important things tosucceed: 1. Sharpen skill; 2. Share information; 3. Bring people withyou!
I followed his instruction and my performance was always onthe top. In 2007, I led the most complicated multinational projectin PepsiCo, and was recognized as the only “Outstanding” performancein team. In 2008, I earned PMP certifi cate. In 2011, mysecond book: You Must Know Project Management, based on myexperience in PepsiCo soon became the bestselling project managementbook in China.
During the work in PepsiCo, I realized that I have a good senseon marketing. In 2011, I changed my career path from R&D to marketing. My team won the Golden Effi e Award for Durex digital marketingwork. Later, I did digital marketing for Steve Jobs: the Biography, which sold twice more copies in China than in US. Recently,I published my third book: Make Your Product Sexy . Without theguidance from Carlos, a Tech alumnus, at my early career stage, Icouldn't have achieved all of these.
Dot 3: A happy family
When I fi rst came to Atlanta, David and Nancy Scott were myhosts. They said,“ Many international students come to US, but fewhave chance to know life of Americans. I hope you enjoy your homehere!”
Yes, I did!
David Scott, a Tech alumnus and a retired business man, toldme how to treat people equally and make wise decisions.
One day I noticed an article in newspaper: A guy won a biglottery, but he spent all the money very quickly and turned very pooragain. I asked David: “If you were him, what would you do withsuch a big amount of money?” David said:“I am not sure what Iwill do, but I AM sure that I won't change my lifestyle!”
I keep his words in my mind. When I earned some extra moneyfrom my books, I didn't use them to buy luxury goods, but paidtuition fees for a marketing course and Spanish lessons.
Thank God for giving me such good experiences in Tech. Itgave me a wonderful height to start, and now I hope its MBA programwill be my wings to the next goal of my life.
