首先,一个可数名词（如这里的effect）的用法：have an effect, have effects

我个人的理解是： 1. as different as arsenic is from strychnine
2. and having different effects and连接两个状语成分,是句子some snakes manufacture a poison different in every respect from that of others的状语.

这样翻译过来就是：
某些蛇会分泌一种毒液,这种毒液在任何方面都不同于其他蛇分泌的毒液.这种不同就好比砒霜与马钱子碱的差别,而且这种毒液的效果也不同（于其他毒蛇所分泌毒液的效果）

一种毒药不会只有某一种效果的,所以这里用了统称effects.
