On Love
Maybe I’m too young to advise, but I’d like to say something about love.
Three months ago, my classmate took a train south, I wept the sweat on her forehead, love was silent wish from heart then; my brother mailed me a pair of cotton gloves and told me it was the first snow there norther than Beijing, love is concern; mother put two eggs into my bag in the early morning— care, is the true essence of love.
However, it’s still difficult for people to understand love. The simple western words “I love you” seems all-inclusive, and people express the warmness and vividness of love through forthright hugs and natural kisses. But in eastern countries, I can never forget the father described by San mao— father, as a Chinese, never can be heard ‘I love you’ from his mouth. Chinese cherish love which seems unflowing but is always together with trivia.
Love, in its broad meaning, is an attitude towards life. Love is dual-natured: during your growth, love gives you consolation and makes you successful, but meanwhile you suffer a lot of agony and torture, thoroughly remold yourself and be reborn. If you can’t stand these torments and refuse all temper, just seek the pleasure and peace of love, you’ll never have opportunity to taste great rejoicing or great sadness. Except love, love offers nothing and demands nothing.
One pattern I have identified upon closer examination of a ton of love stories is that so far, and without exception, love, that mysterious compulsion to be with the object of our affections, is always in a good love story( and perhaps too, in life). Along with an obstacle in the pathway to happiness, which requires resolution. Large or small through it may be, the couple’s ability to deal with the said obstacle decides the outcome of their story and makes the difference between a love that wins the day and a love that peters away.
There are different obstacles when love meets its hard time: language, distance, infidelity, pride and so on. What I want to say is, whatever your obstacle is, enjoy your love, as D. H. Lawrence said: Love is the flower of life, and blossoms unexpectedly and without law, and must be plucked where it is found, and enjoyed for the brief hour of its duration.
Different languages indicate that you are people of different kinds. But what’s more? People always say love needs no words and expressions. You can know the pain of being too sensitive with no need of language; you can enjoy the pleasure of contribution without any word. To love, any language is pale and powerless. It cannot be limited by the boundary of country. The flow of love can arrive every corner of the world and can permeate any space. So long as you feel love, go to love, leaving all the prejudices behind, only remember you are in love.
As far as distance is concerned, I don’t think it’s a kind of matter. Perfectly speaking, only the desire of making love can be influenced by the distance. The only important thing is to keep on, maybe, once you have love in your inner side. People always say true love is invincible, I believe it’s true and moreover I make good earnestly.
It’s hard to avoid some mistakes in love affairs, such as infidelity. Once you make some, just stay there and give a meditation on yourself. It’s up to you what choice you’ll make. If you cannot love any more, just leave and find your love. On the contrary, once your lover doesn’t love you any longer, just give enough space for him/her to decide, and trust him/her, “because love gives nothing but itself and takes nothing but from itself. Love doesn’t possess anything nor would it be possess” ( Khalil Gibran). Then if you find you’re wrong, welcome back. It’s priceless of the return of the guilty.
As for pride, I bet that everyone once has this disadvantage, but I think that’s because you haven’t met the one in your life, so there are so many things that you can’t put down. No matter what you are, a princess or a peasant, you’ll forget even what you are. You’ll bleed willingly and joyfully for love provided that you have it, you’ll be eager to change all other side wants you to change and stand everything that you can’t stand before.
General opinions started to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. Seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it’s not particularly dignified of newsworthy, but it’s always there. Fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from people on board were messages of hate, or revenge, they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually, is all around.
Love is all around, always loathing to part, pacing back and forth but there is so much helpless without choice;
Love is all around, always racing against time, days and nights, dawns and dusks, telling words subtly from heart;
Love is all around, whole-hearted, offering all irrespective of rewards, therefore, is perfectly happy to be forgotten by other side smilingly.
As the poet Christina Rossetti indicated in her “Remember” in the 19th century,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad
But what’s love now? love is nothing but emotion flowing in the bottom of heart without a letup; the costless contribution; the heart palpitation in the Valentine’s Day; the past never forgettable; the hobbling silhouette home in the dusk; the days walking through together, …
Let’s remember the great Khalil Gibran’s words in his “The Prophet”:
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.
