Having handed the man a single one million dollar pound note, the millionaires Oliver and Roderick bet on Henry's fortunes.Thinking that Henry would be unable to spend the note,Roderick believed that Henry would,in essence,be as broke as he was without the banknote.Oliver,on the other hand, thought that with the note,Henry could pass himself off as one of the nouveau riche, and just like the European nobles satirized in Vanity Fair,he would be able to live off of credits and loans. In this scene,Oliver and Roderick are to sound aloof and mildly curious.
Henry tried to spend the money in places he was familiar with, like the grocery store or the bar,but nobody believed the note was real.Nobody even bothered to call the cops, thinking he was just making a bad joke.To go to the high end places where the note could be exchanged,Henry would need a suit, which he cannot afford.Realizing that he could not cash the note in England,Henry chose to instead to move to France, where he waited by the ports until news arrived that an American ship bound for Europe, filled with the rich and powerful, had sunk. After that,Henry passed himself as a rich American who lost everything he had in the shipwreck except a million dollar pound note.Pretending to be desperate to purchase new European merchandise from small vendors, none of whom would accept this note,Henry sold the million-pound note to a fellow American, receiving 900,000 pounds for it.Then he moved to the States, out of the eyes of Oliver and Roderick,to begin his own business.
Ten years later,he met the two English millionaires again as their equals.
