Although the setting for the beginning and ending of the story is English and contemporary, with Sally Hill talking to Sir Anthony Evans and Lady Evans in his dressing room at the theatre ,the main part of the story takes place more than sixty-five years before, first in the deprived urban environment into which Tony is born and then on tne farm.
It is a simple story of self-fulfillment and of human generosity, as Tonyfirst of all discovers his own ability almost by accient and then receives the support of the peoplearound him to go on and develop it .
It is also a love story as we gradually realize how the relationship between Tony and Linda is developing.
Therefore , although the story line is very simple and clear ,lots of quite complex issues arise from it which can be of interest to readers of any age.
How do we discover the talents we possess and how do we nurture them? How far is their discovery and development a matter of chance?
Howfar do we need other people and favorable circumstances to discover and nurture them?
